Anxiety Management: Ensuring a Comfortable Dental Experience
At Tooth Sparkler Family Dental, we understand that visiting the dentist can be a source of anxiety for some patients. To support your comfort during treatment, we offer a range of anxiety management options tailored to your individual needs. Our team will discuss suitable options with you to help you feel more at ease during your dental care.
Our Anxiety Management Options
IV Dental Sedation
For patients with higher levels of anxiety or those undergoing more complex procedures, IV sedation may be an option. This form of conscious sedation involves administering sedative and analgesic medications through an intravenous line, which may help you feel more relaxed during treatment.
- You remain conscious: You’ll be able to breathe on your own, and communication with your dentist is possible if needed.
- Deep relaxation: IV sedation helps ease anxiety, making the procedure feel more manageable and less stressful.
- Continuous monitoring: Our dentist and dental nurse will be by your side throughout the procedure to monitor your vital signs and ensure your comfort.
Recovery After IV Sedation
After your treatment with IV sedation, you’ll be moved to a comfortable recovery area to rest until the effects of the sedation wear off. Please note, due to the effects of IV sedation, you will require a responsible adult to escort you home and remain with you for several hours. You must not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours following your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide (RA) Inhaled Sedation
For those who prefer a lighter form of sedation, we offer nitrous oxide (RA) inhaled sedation, commonly known as “laughing gas.” This option is available for both kids and adults and is ideal for managing mild to moderate anxiety.
- Mild sedation: Nitrous oxide helps you relax during your treatment while allowing you to remain fully conscious and responsive.
- Quick recovery: The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, allowing most patients to resume their normal activities shortly after.
- Generally safe for most ages: Nitrous oxide is a great option for both children and adults who may experience anxiety during dental visits.
Therapy Dog Support
We are pleased to offer the comforting presence of our therapy dog during your visit. Our friendly therapy dog is trained to help reduce anxiety and create a calming atmosphere, making your dental experience as stress-free as possible.
- Emotional support: The therapy dog provides comfort and companionship, helping to ease anxiety and create a more relaxed environment.
- A welcoming atmosphere: The presence of our therapy dog helps to make your visit feel more like spending time with a friend rather than a medical appointment.
Risks, Considerations and Recovery After Sedation
Sedation options, including IV sedation and nitrous oxide, may not be suitable for everyone. Your dentist will assess your medical history and discuss whether sedation is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
IV Sedation Considerations:
- You may feel drowsy, light-headed, or have limited memory of the procedure
- There is a risk of side effects such as nausea, headache, or prolonged drowsiness
- In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, including breathing or cardiovascular effects
- Continuous monitoring is required during the procedure
Before your appointment:
- You may be advised to avoid eating or drinking for a period before treatment
- You should inform your dentist of all medications and medical conditions
After IV sedation:
- You will need a responsible adult to accompany you home
- You should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for at least 24 hours
- You may feel drowsy for several hours after the procedure
- Follow all post-operative instructions provided by your dentist
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas):
- Effects usually wear off quickly after treatment
- Some patients may experience mild dizziness or nausea
Your dentist will explain all potential risks, benefits, and alternatives before proceeding with any sedation option.
Comfortable Sleep Dentistry with IV Dental Sedation
At Tooth Sparkler Family Dental, we understand that sometimes coming to the dentist for treatment can be scary, and we don’t want this to stop you from receiving the treatment you need.
We now offer IV sedation for patients who find that dental procedures cause anxiety.
The aim of conscious sedation is to help patients feel more relaxed during dental procedures. Sedative and analgesic medications are carefully adjusted to achieve a level of relaxation while you remain conscious. You will continue to breathe independently, and communication is usually possible if needed. The dentist and dental team will monitor you throughout the procedure.
After your treatment, you will be supported in a recovery area while the effects of the sedation begin to wear off. Recovery times may vary between individuals, and post-treatment care instructions will be provided.
If this sounds like something you would benefit from, please contact us today to book a consult appointment.
Amanda
Amanda (MED000XXXXXX) is an intensive care doctor (BMed [Dist], BMedSci) who has been working since 2015 across several NSW hospitals caring for critically ill patients, and in operating theatres as an anaesthetic registrar.
She is available to provide conscious sedation for patients who may experience debilitating anxiety around dental procedures. Amanda will assess the suitability for intravenous sedation beforehand (starting with a phone consultation reviewing any medical comorbidities) and will closely monitor the patient before, during and shortly after the procedure. She loves being able to help patients through what can be a stressful experience, and also enjoys the excuse to work closely with her long time dentist and friend Dr Lonergan!
In her free time Amanda is usually preoccupied with expanding her repertoire of wiggles songs that make her baby boy laugh, or trying to catch a dip at her local beach Coogee.
