FAQs: What to Do in Common Dental Emergencies

What should I do if an adult tooth is knocked out or traumatised?

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root).
  • Gently rinse it with milk or saliva. Do not scrub or use tap water.
  • If possible, reinsert it into the socket. If not, place it in milk, saliva, or a tooth-saving container.
  • Seek emergency care within 30–60 minutes for the best outcome.
  • Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth—it can affect the adult tooth beneath.
  • Clean the area gently with water.
  • Watch for swelling, discolouration, or discomfort.
  • Contact us promptly for advice and follow-up planning.
