Post Extraction Instructions

  • Wait until the local anaesthetic has worn off before you eat or drink anything to avoid biting your lip or cheek.
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day. Strenuous exercise will increase your blood pressure and may cause the extraction socket to bleed.
  • Take Panadol or Nurofen for pain relief- as directed by your dentist.
  • Eat soft foods like rice, pasta, soup, well cooked meat and fish, soft fruit & vegetables and yoghurt for the next few days.
  • Brush your teeth as normal. Just be careful when brushing teeth adjacent to extraction socket.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours. Smoking delays healing and increases your risk of infection.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Avoid spitting or rinsing today. Rinsing too vigorously may cause the socket to bleed. Rinse gently from tomorrow onwards.
  • Rinse with warm salty water (1/2 teaspoon salt in glass of warm water) after eating. Do this for about 1 week.
  • If you notice that the socket is bleeding: Bite down on gauze provided for 10 minutes.
  • If you have any problems or questions please call the Practice on 9971 6134
